Green Room

Film Link encourages a sustainable approach to film-making in the East. Not only will 'green screening' help film-makers reduce their carbon footprint, it can save money. At the same time, green screening can help to conserve the beauty of the landscape and buildings so they can continue to provide the perfect backdrop for film-makers.

Green Screen helps encourage environmentally friendly filming

Launched in February 2008 to help film, TV and commercial producers cut climate change emissions in London and supported by the London Filming Partnership, Green Screen has developed a practical package of support for film-makers including a user-friendly guide. Whether you film in London or elsewhere in the UK, Green Screen has identified areas where productions can decrease their carbon footprint both on location and in the studio. Carbon Aware offers the film and stills industry a simple, transparent and cheap method of offsetting unavoidable carbon.

How does it work? The production company emails CAP (Carbon Aware Productions) its call sheets. CAP then calculates the carbon output of the power used at the location or studio and the distance traveled by the crew and cast.

Within hours of receiving the call sheet the production company receives a certificate stating the carbon footprint generated, the amount of trees planted here in the UK and their location.

Productions on average emit 1–5 tonnes of carbon every day. To offset 1 tonne of carbon costs the production company £25. The woodland is planted and managed by the Woodland Trust.

CAP's intention is not to neutralize all greenhouse gases produced when filming, but to encourage a reduction, offset what is unavoidable, and make them carbon aware.

Filming Code of Practice

Film Link encourages the adoption of Film London’s Code of Practice. Whilst a voluntary agreement adopted by the London Boroughs, this comprehensive tool can be usefully applied in the East.

The Code encourages productions to operate within best practice guidelines to ensure those locations which host a film crew are treated with respect and remain film-friendly for future projects. The Code also offers clarity on the statutory obligations of filming activity.
